Here's an article I found written by Owen from Kotaku. It's a well thought out piece on sports gaming possibly going to a bi-yearly release. http://kotaku.com/5487092/tinker-to-chance-game-makers-rethinking-an-orthodoxy Sports Gaming Tinker to Chance: Game Makers Rethinking an Orthodoxy?

It will never happen with Madden. And the biggest reason companies don't do this is that they won't double their sales every other year to make up for it. Other than the niche titles I see annual releases as the only way to go. I CAN see them possibly releasing disc based updates every other year and then patching the game through DLC every so often. I can also see roster update options requiring a new game purchase (sort of like NBA Live's DNA). If you want the latest Madden roster and got your game on e-bay - better buy a roster code from EA. Heck, they could make offseason roster updates available through DLC to make money. How many Madden fans would buy an updated roster after the draft? Probably a ton - and those guys would automatically buy the full Madden in the fall too. |

I agree with Rudy about the never will happen with bigger titles, I would love to see just updates to titles like NHL, or MLB and NBA and them coming out every two years, so they can focus on more innovations and make gamers want the new innovations then staying with the old stuff |

They won't double their revenue this way, but they would be reducing costs, which could end up in more profits. This makes absolutely no sense for Madden, and NCAA and NBA 2k would be close calls - it could benefit them. It makes a lot of sense to do this for hockey, golf, and baseball games (and the SvR series, I think). |

Couldn't agree more with the Pachter's assesment that Take-Two won't be working on 2K12 over the next 24 months. Chances are they'll begin working on it after 2K11 is released for the Wii. Which means they essentially put no more effort into the series than before. Which basically proves they have very little interest in returning to next-gen consoles. Bye-bye 2K hockey. It's a real shame that you're gone. It's hard not to be bitter but Treyarch games made one of the best sports games in 2K3. Then they got bought-out by Activision and Kush took over. I firmly believe that if Treyarch was still in charge, EA probably isn't #1 right now in hockey games and we're certainly not talking about the demise of 2K hockey games. Heck, even Rude liked NHL2K3. That says something. Edited by Hank, Mar 7 2010, 09:10 PM.
