"When I went over there (to EA), a lot of it was for personal reasons. I wanted to try something new, try a new challenge. But after being there and spending some time over at EA, it was clear that they do things a different way, and in a way it's just inefficient and just not the place to be to make the best games," said Wang in a recent conference call with ESPN to announce his return. "When I went there, I immediately missed VC (Visual Concepts), and it's just one of those things where I tried to stick it out as long as I could, but I wanted to come back. With some of the creative decisions over at EA, it just made it difficult to stay there. They just want to make a different game than I had a vision for. So I reached out to (2K's senior vice president of sports development) Greg Thomas and he was gracious enough to have me back." |

I guess its a case of the grass isn't always greener on the other side. I'm sure Wang will be up to the challenge of taking out EA's basketball division |

I would be absolutely shocked if EA discontinued their basketball series. If anything, maybe they reboot it ala 'Triple Play', but I can't see EA never having a pro basketball game in it's library. Are sales that bad? EDIT: Guess I answered my own question by going to VGChartz. 2K10 doubled Live's sales. Even NHL10 beat Live 10: http://www.vgchartz.com/games/index.php?name=NBA+10 Edited by Hank, Feb 15 2010, 01:28 PM.

The biggest issue with sports games is that most of them feel like re-runs. Especially when they're released every single year. At the beggining of every console's life, usually a new engine is built for each sports game. The issue is, by year 3 or 4, boredom sets in. I loved NHL07 but I didn't even buy NHL10 this year. It's not that NHL10 is bad, but it feels 'old hat' already. The same could be said for other games; even The Show. But with non-sports games, usually sequels don't come out every single year. And even then, you get a different story line, some innovations to controls, etc. With sports, there's very little they can do in order to keep things fresh. That's why I think we'll be seeing annual 'upgrade fees' instead of all new games pretty soon. Eventually, you won't be buying a new game every year, but your annual fee will include patchs, roster updates, changes, etc. This gives the developers more time to improve on the initial engine as well as save some money for each side. The problem with that is, you better have a solid engine to start. |

I totally agree with you. Annual upgrades sucks. They make money off of it. They have since the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo. Since then you've not had a single year of Madden Football that's not been missed. Madden will be out each year. At this rate, NHL10 will be out each year (due to sales and metacritic scores). FIFA will be out each year (it's still EA's best selling sports game world wide). The rest of their lineup could go bi-yearly and you could "Title Update" during the off year. |
