I picked this up this week. The first gripe I had with the game for me personally was that I thought the goalies were pain in the asses to score on. Thus I went into the sliders and turned down the Goalie Reaction Time and upped the Goalie Screen Effect. It's made a big difference for me. Instead of having my first 3 play now games go to OT, I was able to score 4 and 3 goals the next couple of games. The passing isn't as tape to tape (as they say) as it was last year. That's been a bit of an adjustment. I'm glad for the increase of sliders on the game. They have a couple "Tuner Versions" out already. If you don't know what that is: EA Canada made a back door to the guts of the gameplay so that they could tweak as they see fit instead of having to issue it via a patch. So you could see 15 revisions this year. All of which you can use. If you like Tuner version 3 instead of 5, then so be it, use 5. It's a very innovative idea for a sports game and hopefully more of the EA sports teams add that into their games. Thus far I'm enjoying what's there. This year the puck is alive a lot more than it was in previous years. Lots of new sliders for both the CPU and Human so that way you can adjust to what you want to see on both sides. This years version won't make new fans of the series if you didn't like like 08 and 09, but they did do a heck of a lot of work on making things better. Board Pinning isn't to bad. It's not as good as what 2k has done in the past, but at least it finally happens and it's easy to pull off and it's useful. I've got the PS3 version. |

thanks for the impressions Ted, I haven't had a chance to pick this up yet but have a question or 2, is the triangle button still activate the hook and fight, it was annoying last year when I went with a hook and it ended up in a fight and whats the jersey options? |

First, did you get your PS3 updated via your CPU download? Tap Triangle to instigate/start a fight Hold Triangle to pin a player against the boards L2 + Triangle is a Slash There's no more "hook" button. Hitting X (stick lift) from behind and and pressing Y (fight) from behind can and will get you called for tripping and hooking. It all depends on angles. Jersey options are all of what you had last year and the current ones. So everyone has some type of Alternate Jersey and retro ones as well. |

Some nice things I've seen tonight while playing around with NHL 10: Eric Staal took a slap shot to the chest. He clutched his chest briefly and wasn't able to get to the puck that was immediately beside him making for another "Cam Ward says YES" with a Devils Goal. I've seen guys batting down the puck via their hands on both O and D. Guys swatting at the puck that's in the air with their stick. I've got a great replay of Brodeur coming out to play the puck but misfires the pass (that actually happened last year in the playoffs which was crazy to see and to see it in the game was really a cool touch) which lead to Eric Staal getting the puck and putting one in the net. 5 minute periods are WAY TO FAST and the games zip right by. My first game I only had 14 shots with the Devils having 15. A close 1-0 win for the Hurricanes. I've gone into the NEW Playoff mode. Using the Hurricanes. This is a fully playoff and not just "Battle for the Cup" which is two teams playing what ever League's Cup. This is going to be awesome to have old school playoffs like back in the day. You still have Be a GM mode which is enhanced and also a new Single Season mode. I give EA Canada a lot of credit for putting this stuff in. It might come off as fluff, but it's good fluff. I've got the game on Pro with sliders tweaked from the Hardcore play style. The sliders I've changed are: Passing Accuracy at 1 for the A. They missfire passes more realistically. Manual Passing Off (still toying around with it in practice mode) Goalies on both sides: 0 for reaction and Max for Screen Effectiveness. I personally thought the goalies were too tough. Game speed at Notch 2 (on left). Penalties Maxed and Penalties in Real-time Maxed. Outside of that, I'm pretty happy with how it plays. I'm looking for a mix of some Sim, but fun as well. I'd like to Rent 2k10 at some point just to see how their game turned out. |

I'll say this. IF you like 09, but wished for separate HUM/CPU sliders, board pinning, some real dump and chase, less accurate passing for Hum/CPU (and the sliders do work to make it even more wonky), and a more lively puck that feels alive... You're getting that in NHL 10. I think those are some pretty big additions to the game. Then toss in the Extra game modes they added. The update to Franchise mode with Be a GM. I'm reading that some like the Franchise Mode in 2k10 where others like the NHL10's. I think it's more preference for what you've played the past couple years. |
