Guys, after two days with this game, all I have to say is Don't give up on this game right away. There's magic under the hood. The default sliders may turn off some people because you move like you're stuck in mud without the burst button. But when adjusting some settings such as the skating speed, acceleration and burst, you can get this to play very well. What bothers me about these reviews is that they judge all hockey games based on the EA model. EA has a very good game. No question. It's won many awards and rightfully so. So then if you're going to compete with them, why build a game exactly like theirs? 2K didn't and it's a good thing. However, the learning curve for 2K10 is a very wide and deep (that's what she said). You must get used to the physics and skating dynamics of this game. It's not like EA where you can roar around the ice without worrying about momentum or physics to slow you down or hurt your progress. For example. In a game where I was playing with the Caps, the puck was in my corner and Mike Green went back to retrieve it. I had a guy on my back so I barreled straight into the corner and then tried to turn as soon as I got the puck. Wrong! Instead of making a seamless turn out of the corner, Green slowed up to brace for the boards, grabbed the puck and then began churning his legs to get moving again. By that time, the opposition was all over me and a turnover occurred. At first I was miffed! WTH 2K! But then watching the replay I saw my mistake. So the next time this exact scenario occurred, instead of making a straight line for the puck, I came in on an angle so I could turn and burn once I corralled the puck. And guess what? I was able to circle into the corner, grab the puck and head up ice without any loss of speed or momentum. And the guy that was on my back? In the dust. Other things to consider. Beware of over using the poke check or stick lift. You can't just thrash on the poke check button over and over and not pay the price. Your player will stop moving momentarily when trying to poke the puck away. Miss and you can be assured your man will fly right by you laughing hysterically at your feeble defensive attempts. And not all men were born equal. Based on attributes some will poke check more efficiently and faster than others. So be aware of who you're poke checking with. Another thing that I love about the game is how if you allow the opposition in the slot with time and space with the puck, bye-bye. Just like in the real NHL. So if you're abysmal at defense and you watch the CPU fire one puck after another past your all-star goalie don't blame your tender or the game. It's your fault. I guarantee you if you allowed even a 3rd line player all the time in the world in front of Luongo or Brodeur, they would bury it a majority of the time. Just watch the All-star game or even when the CBC ran that 'pond hockey' summer tournament. With no checking and no defense even guys like Todd Harvey were sniping pucks from 15 feet out. Yes, there are things I don't like about it. For instance, why aren't assists shown in the score overlay after a goal? Heck, they don't even show you how many goals that player has scored thus far in the season. It only says "1st goal of the game". And there's no replays between whistles either. The only replays you see during the game are for goals and penalties. Yes, they will show replays of various things during the intermissions, but that's it. Commentary also sucks. Another thing that I don't like is how jerky the animations can be. Especially when there's multiple animations linked together. It looks jerky and unnatural. But all of that doesn't take away from a solid gameplay engine. The AI is very smart. It will work the puck around, capitalize on mistakes and force you to the outside in the defensive zone. But again, you need the right sliders. Tweak them as you please. All in all, I would give this game a 7.5/10. What keeps it down are the suspect animations and lack of presentation. Some AI quirks are there too as the defenders sometimes back into their own net too often sometimes. But again sliders have helped that out. If you want glam and 'fun' hockey, NHL10 might be better. But if you're looking for a gorgeous looking solid hockey game and you don't mind tweaking to get it to play right, then 2K10 is a solid game. |

Thanks for posting your impressions on 2k10 Hank! I figure that next year when Visual Concepts has time to tighten up the animations and such that the game will start being like it's hey day when it was THE Hockey Game. NHL10 isn't to shabby once you mess with slider on it as well. You can get that game to play slow. To have errant passes from both Human and CPU players. The AI does come off smarter this year. You can't get goals in the usual EA Hockey scoring ways... that's really impressed me this year. The puck physics seem more "live" as well. I see where both games have pluses and minuses. EA has a ton of "extras" this year that are hard to ignore. Modes and improvements to Be A Pro (camera angles, being sent up and down), improvements to Franchise. I really do want to play 2k10 to see the improvements and get excited for what the battle of the 2011 games will bring. |

I agree Ted. I know it seems like we say this every year, but next year 2K could overtake EA. And the reason why I think it's different this time is that VC has said since taking over halfway through 2K9's development cycle that it was a 3-year plan. And from what I've heard VC isn't even taking time off from one release to the next. They blew right past the 2K9 release and continued working on making 2K10 and it's the same this year. One of the developers even said in the insider blogs that he had to 'get back to working on 2K11'. That was in August. VC definitely has something going here. But they need to add more to the presentation, improve the goalies and make the controls more responsive. If they do that, it could be lights out for EA. |

It wouldn't be lights out for EA, but it will bring over the Hockey Sim guys which will cut into some of EA's market share. The thing is, EA has been trying to make a more SIM like game the past 2yrs with all of it's sports line. I think that it only benifits sports in general IF they continue to do that. If they want an arcade fluffly game then make Madden Arcade (like they are doing) on XBLA/PSN and put out an NBA Jam style game on XBLA/PSN, and put out another NHL 3 on 3 Arcade game like last year on XBLA and PSN. Again, I liked what I got to play for 2k10 for 45mins. That it felt like the franchise is moving back to the right direction - thank the gaming sports gods. |
