Let's Go Blue!

I'm going to break this up by conference (mainly so I can still read this at work). After reading some college football news and previews, here are my thoughts on this season.

Big Ten

The Big 10 looks weak this year. I think they have been unfairly criticized due to some bowl failures of OSU the last few years but this year doesn’t look good. OSU and Penn State are still the two best teams but they are worse than they were a year ago and both lost their bowl games. Iowa might be able to make a run. A good QB in Stanzi and a generally solid team that misses OSU on the schedule could make a run. Many teams have a shot at the Big 10 title including Michigan if Tate Forcier plays well but that is asking a lot. I’ll take Penn State for the title because of Darryl Clark and Even Royster. OSU also travels to Happy Valley. I do think Terrelle Pryor is a stud and he will be extremely dangerous this year.

ACC

The ACC is wide freaking open. A lot of solid but not so great teams. Virginia Tech lost their starting RB Darren Evans for the year and they were supposed to be the favourite in the Coastal division. Georgia Tech and FSU should be strong but six or seven teams could win the ACC this year. I’ll pick Georgia Tech for the best team this year as they have both a great QB in Josh Nesbitt running that option game and possibly the best running back in the country in Jonathan Dwyer. I wonder if the ACC will catch up to that offense though. Paul Johnson might be the best coach in the conference and that does count for a lot in college football.

Big East

Who isn’t excited about Rutgers, Cincinatti or Uconn? Yawn. OK, they still have a few good teams in Pitt, WVU and USF and any of those teams can win it all. I’m going to pick WVU because I think Jarrett Brown will do well to replace Pat White and Noel Devine is so exciting at RB. Plus I don’t like the Moustache in Pitt and Grothe throws too many picks.

SEC

This is a stud conference. The SEC looks to have some really good teams this year with four teams that people are talking about. Florida, Alabama, LSU and Ole Miss. Florida returns everyone on defense and has Tebow. Bama looks strong all around but how will the QB play be? You can say the same thing about LSU. Ole Miss has Jevan Snead who some argue is the best passing QB in the SEC and top pro prospect. But can I really pick Ole Miss to win the SEC? Georgia is no slouch either but hard to pick them to win it when they couldn’t with Stafford and Moreno and both left for the NFL. I’m going to pick Florida again because they have an easier schedule and they have Tebow at QB and Urban Meyer as coach.

Big 12

The Big 12 has two divisions: the North and the South but they should really be called the Pretenders and the Contenders. Nobody in the North will sniff the national championship game. But the South has three legitimate contenders in Texas, Oklahoma and Ok. State, all of which return their starting quarterbacks. Despite McCoy who could win the Heisman, I have a hard time picking Texas because of the lack of a great running back and an OL that isn’t all that great. Too much pressure on McCoy.

Ok. St. looks to be really good and people should watch this team as they will be incredibly exciting. The offense is fantastic all around and they improved themselves at defensive co-ordinator.

But I think Oklahoma will be the best of the Big 12. They will still be explosive on offense and the defense will be better. They were a couple plays away from beating Florida for the national championship last year and I think they might do it all again as long as the young OL comes together. Plus Bradford is just an outstanding quarterback.
