TRADE: Jeff Francouer to Mets for Ryan Church

I personally don't like Jeff going to the Mets. I still think he'll be a good player one day, especially now that he's out of Atlanta, and I'm not fond of the idea of him getting the oppurtunity to crush the Braves.

Church doesn't really help the Braves much, though. He doesn't hit for a lot of power, but he does hit well against righties. He has a .310 avg, .360 obp, .424 slg this year against RHP as opposed to .167, .226, .188. against lefties. Over the three years before this year, he had a .510 slg against righties. Since Matt Diaz is going .354, .422, .514 against lefties, that makes him and Church a strong platoon, but still not a ton of production coming from LF.

I hope this makes the Braves better, but I honestly still don't think they're a playoff team. I think they're pitching is great, but I don't think they're going to be able to improve their offense enough until the offseason. They're really only strong offensively at four of eight positions, and none of those guys are top notch power hitters. They need a big power hitter at either RF, LF, or 1B to compete. You can't get away with mediocre to weak power at all three of those power-hitting positions. I think they need to purge the roster (at least position players) in the offseason.

At 1B, Kotchman is only adequete if you have great power in the OF. He's only batting .274, and his slg is .395. That's really low for a 1B. There's a couple good options in free agency, in Delgado, Branyan, and LaRoche. Delgado can still crush the ball, Branyan is having a monster season, and LaRoche is on his way to his 6th straight 20 hr season.

At 2b, Orlando Hudson is the only real appealing option at 2b, so they'll probably have to stick with Martin Prado there. Prado is a career .313 hitter though, so he's probably due for the chance to be an everyday player.

At SS they'll probably stick with Yunel unless they can get something really good for him. There's really nobody in the system anymore to replace him since they traded Lillibridge.

3b, C, and CF are set.

LF, they have to find an improvement there. They'll probably pursue Bay and Holliday, and maybe Crawford if his $10M option isn't picked up.

RF, I think they'll pursue Jermaine Dye and Rick Ankiel here, or stay pat and wait for Heyward.

I see they need to majorly improve 2 of the three LF, RF, and 1B either this year or in the offseason to get to a playoff level again.

This to me almost looks like equal players that are getting swapped for a change of scenery.

Not really. Church is a 15 hr left-handed hitter and has been pretty consistently around that level for most his career. There isn't a whole lot of upside. Francouer, on the other hand, is a righty that has been playing WAY under his potential. Church is probably a little better right now, but Francouer has all that upside. Plus his right handed bat will do well in Citi field as opposed to Church's left handed bat, and Jeff's great arm will help.

You know how it is with some guys though. All the potential in the world, but it never seems to click.
