This is basically 2K's equivelant of Road to the Show or NHL's Be A Player. And there's a DLC for a Draft Combine where your Player begins his humble career. Sounds really cool.

I do think that 2k is trying to do something cool with the basketball this year. Having a full on mode like they have in The Show, NCAA, Madden, and NHL where you use one guy is great. Much better than what Live did last year. I'm not sure that I'd want to pay for this Draft Combine feature though to only have to pay for the rest of the full game.
