PS3 Games Online...; A sort of Help Sheet for your Network...

I've noticed reading the forums here and on OS that people have had problems playing games online with their PS3s.

It really helps having your PS3 more open on your network. It's kind of a bitch to do, but right now I've got it going really well on my side.
This is what I've done.

Most games on the Playstation Network are still Peer to Peer... so the lag isn't really from their networks.
Flipping through their menus and trying to log onto their Front End pages are where issues will come up.

I'm using a Linksys WRT54G Wireless Router:

On your PC use the correct IP number to access your router. (For my Linksys it's 192.168.1.1 to access it).
Head too where you can see your true IP Address and your DNS 1 and DNS 2 numbers.
Write down those DNS 1 & DNS 2 numbers.

Head back to your PS3, On the PS3... go to Network connections.
Go to "setup connection."

When it asks for the IP Assign select Manual instead of Automatic.

You'll have to manually put in all the numbers.
For the IP you'll use what ever address your router would randomly assign for your PCs

Example:
My Linksys IP addresss start with 192.168.1.___
(I'm using .20, I wouldn't use a number in the 100s since your DCHP is normally set to 50by default).

Then you'll have to type in your Gateway (which is your router's IP)
Then it'll ask for the subnet mask (which you can find the default for in you router)
Then it will as for DNS 1 and 2.

Once your done it will run a test on the connection.

Then Head back too your menu system for the Router on your PC.

In the Port-foward type in the Range of 0-8000 and put your PS3's IP address.

Once your done with this... power cycle everything. Turn off the Highspeed Modem, your router, and all your PCs, PS3... then restart them.

Quite a few people have still had some issues opening ports for the PS3 and it still not wanting to work.
That's why I've thrown my PS3 to the DMZ.

That has helped even my download speeds not too mention the boost of playing on their network!

NYIsles and Anyone else feel free to add what you've done. This topic can do nothing, but help everyone here!

************
Step by Step for a WRT54G

Pull up your router menu settings
Heat too...
Satus> Internet (configuration type)

Get the numbers for
Subnet Mask:
DNS 1:
DNS 2:

Turn on your PS3
Head too...

Network Settings > Internet Settings

When it asks for Auto or Manual setup pick Manual.

It will then ask you for your SSID to your network... your password for security... etc.
When you get to the IP numbers.

PS3 IP: too make it easy use 192.168.1.20 (same settings I have)
Subnet Mask : (info from your status settings)
Default Router : Your router's IP
Primary DNS Server : (info from your status settings)
Secondary DNS Server : (info from your status settings)

Then it'll ask you about MTU - keep it on auto
Then it'll ask you about UPnP - Enable it

It'll then test the settings.
Hopefully it finds the router and such.

Next Step:

Router Menu
Applications & Gaming > Port Range Foward

Application: PS3
Start: 0
End: 8000
Protocol: Both
IP: 192.168.1.20
Click Enable

Then power off your PS3 and your Router
Turn them back on...
Head to your PS3. Go too:
Network Settings > Settings List

See if you have Nat 2 and UPnP

NP Brandon. I'm glad that you were able to get online and have a fairly lag free game. It was fun playing a few innings.

Like I was saying last night, not many people have their PS3 setup right on their network. It's not as user friendly as the XBOX 360 is. The 360 you plug up and it's pretty much good to go. Open a couple ports and it plays nicely. The PS3 however still plays kind of eeh when you open ports. Putting in the DMZ however does make it a lot better.

Did this help you Rudy?

The UPnP sometimes likes to shut off randomly on Linksys routers.
Thus you'll need to reboot your router if it does.

You can find out of it the UPnP stops being availabe by going too
Network Connections > Show/Current Settings.
It'll show you your IP
What NAT you have and if UPnP is Available.
